MDL signs MoU to join Maharashtra greenfield shipbuilding cluster as anchor shipyard

New Delhi: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries Park Maharashtra Limited (NSHIPML) to participate as the Anchor Shipyard in the proposed Greenfield Shipbuilding Industrial Cluster at Dighi in Maharashtra.

The MoU has been signed in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Minister for Fisheries and Ports Nitesh Rane in Mumbai.

The proposed shipbuilding cluster is planned with an annual shipbuilding capacity of at least 1.2 million Gross Tonnage (GT) and an estimated investment of around Rs 15,000 crore.

The Dighi project is expected to facilitate the construction of large commercial vessels and support the development of a maritime industrial ecosystem comprising ancillary industries, MSMEs, technology partners and skilled employment.

The initiative marks a strategic expansion for MDL beyond its established capabilities in warship and submarine construction into large-scale commercial shipbuilding.

The project is also positioned as a contribution towards India's long-term maritime ambitions under Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
