New Delhi: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), India’s premier defence shipyard and a Navratna company under the Ministry of Defence, has signed an exclusive teaming agreement with Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) for the design and construction of Landing Platform Docks (LPDs) for the Indian Navy.
The agreement has been signed on Tuesday during 'India Maritime Week 2025' in Mumbai, marking a significant step in strengthening India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. SDHI, India’s largest shipbuilding and heavy fabrication company, will collaborate with MDL to jointly deliver advanced amphibious warfare platforms for the Navy.
The collaboration follows the Defence Acquisition Council’s (DAC) recent approval for the acquisition of LPDs, a major capability addition aimed at enhancing the Navy’s ability to project power, conduct amphibious operations, and undertake humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions.
Under the teaming agreement, MDL will leverage its extensive expertise in ship design, project management, and system integration, while SDHI will provide its large-scale shipbuilding infrastructure, the biggest in the country, for construction.
The partnership combines the technical, financial, and operational strengths of both shipyards to deliver state-of-the-art vessels efficiently and cost-effectively. It also embodies the Government of India’s vision of promoting Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in the defence sector by blending the quality and reliability of a leading public sector enterprise with the agility and competitiveness of the private sector.
Through this collaboration, MDL and SDHI aim to reduce build times, improve quality standards, and optimize costs, ensuring timely delivery of complex platforms vital for the Indian Navy’s modernisation and self-reliance under the Make in India initiative.
