

New Delhi: A statement issued by the Ministry of Defence stated that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will lead a high-level Indian delegation to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Minister’s meeting to be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on April 28. During the meeting, the defence ministers of various member countries will discuss a number of issues related to the defence and security of the region. Issues related to international peace, counter-terrorism and defence cooperation among SCO member states will also be discussed.

Announcing the news, Singh said in a post on X, “Leaving for Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan. Looking forward to attend the SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting scheduled to be held tomorrow. Shall highlight India’s commitment towards global peace, amidst the security challenges prevailing in the world, apart from conveying India’s consistent stance on Zero Tolerance for Terrorism and Extremism. Will also be interacting bilaterally with the counterparts of other SCO Member states and with the Indian Community at Bishkek.”

SCO meet comes against backdrop of West Asia crisis
This year the SCO meeting is taking place at a time when West Asia is witnessing a geopolitical turmoil. Singh will highlight India’s commitment to global peace and its firm stance on the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
The SCO is an intern-governmental organisation which was established on June 15, 2001 by China in Shanghai and several other central Asian nations. Its membership includes India, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus. India became a full member in 2017 and assumed the rotating chairmanship in 2023.
