Earth Day: SAIL-RSP incorporates new systems for earth-friendly steelmaking

Rourkela: SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has been continuously making efforts to produce steel in a green-way so as to protect and cherish the gifts of mother earth. With this objective new technologies and systems are being incorporated in a strategic manner. Besides, as per the guidelines of the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB), Odisha, a number of measures are also being taken up by the steel Plant to further improve the quality of the environment.

One such major initiative is the installation of a Dry Fog Dust Suppression System (DFDS) in the Phase- II area of Ore Bedding and Blending Plant (OBBP) in March 2020. The new system installed at the base mix preparation and dispatch area in OBBP is playing an important role in reducing the particulate matter concentration in ambient air, besides improving the working environment.

Installation of two secondary emission control systems or dog houses in the Basic Oxygen Furnace – 1 and 2 of Steel Melting Shop-2 on December 30, 2019, was another major environmental-friendly endeavour of RSP in the recent times. The secondary ventilation systems are designed to collect gases and fumes by specially designed hoods/enclosures, arranged as close as possible at the emission source, during material handling and non-blow period. This extremely efficient system is eliminating the discharge of dust to the environment thereby making the environment much cleaner and healthier.

Waste gas cleaning systems (WGCS) were also added to kiln number- 2, 3 and 4 of Calcining Plant-II recently. Equipped with the latest new pulse jet type offline bag filter technology these systems are ensuring stack emission from the kiln well below the norm of 50 mg per normal cubic meter of gas.

Some other important initiatives were taken in the last fiscal include, installation of mechanical wheel washing facility at Hirakud Gate, the introduction of sodium hypochlorite treatment for removal of toxic materials in BOD Plant, repair of baghouses connected to the CDI facilities of BF-5, provision of a new sedimentation tank in Blast Furnace for recycling the effluent back to the Clarifloculator and successful commissioning of the fume-free Oxy-propane lancing, cutting activities of MRD.

Besides, to further enhance the canopy of green inside the steel plant premises 1.45 lakh saplings were planted during the last one year.
