New Delhi: Eminent economist R Kavita Rao has taken charge as the Director of NIPFP (National Institute of Public Finance and Policy) for a five-year term. Rao has replaced Pinaki Chakraborty. "We are delighted to inform you that Professor R Kavita Rao has been appointed as Director of National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), for a five year term, commencing June 20, 2022," NIPFP said in a tweet.
Rao has been working as a professor at NIPFP. She holds a Master's degree in Economics from Delhi School of Economics and a PhD from Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Calcutta.
She has been involved in a number of training programmes on Value Added Tax (VAT) Policy and Administration for officials of sales tax departments of state governments, in the run-up to the introduction of Value Added Tax in states, in place of the present cascading
type of tax.
Rao has also organised a number of workshops for senior officials of state finance
departments to facilitate a dialogue on the design of VAT to be introduced in the states.
She has been associated as a consultant for the World Bank, with the ADB-World Bank mission to assess the economic impact of the Gujarat earthquake of January 26, 2001. She was Member of the Technical Expert Committee on VAT, formed by the Ministry of Finance,
to provide technical inputs for the smooth implementation of VAT and completion of the process of transition into the new regime.
The National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) is a centre for research in public economics and policies. Founded in 1976, the institute undertakes research, policy advocacy and capacity building in areas related to public economics. Although the institute receives an annual grant from the Ministry of Finance, and various state governments, it is an autonomous institution.
