The event was attended by Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik; Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal; CEA Chairperson Ghanshyam Prasad and CEO of Tata Power-DDL Dwijadas Basak, along with senior leaders and stakeholders from the power sector.

Around 250 linemen and supervisors from more than 66 state and private power generation companies, transmission licensees and distribution companies participated in the programme, which provided a platform to share experiences, discuss operational challenges in maintaining uninterrupted power supply and exchange insights on safety practices.

The programme began with the administration of a safety pledge, where participants reaffirmed their commitment to adhering to safety protocols to protect themselves, their families and society.

Addressing the gathering, Naik said that Lineman Diwas, observed during National Safety Week, recognises the dedication of frontline workers who ensure uninterrupted electricity supply. He emphasised the need to strengthen workplace safety culture through consistent use of personal protective equipment, proper shutdown confirmation before maintenance work and regular training and capacity building.

He also highlighted the role of modern technologies such as smart grids, real-time monitoring systems, AI-enabled predictive maintenance and drone-based inspections in identifying potential faults in advance and reducing risks for field personnel. Referring to the theme of this year’s event, “Seva, Suraksha, Swabhiman,” he said it reflects the spirit of service, safety and dignity of the power sector’s frontline workforce.

Power Secretary Agarwal described linemen as the “warriors of the power sector,” noting that they work in harsh weather conditions and during natural disasters to restore electricity and maintain power supply. While automation is increasing in the sector, he said linemen continue to play a crucial role in restoring systems and maintaining network reliability. He urged utilities to ensure that all field personnel are equipped with standardised safety kits and tools.

Agarwal also suggested that utilities institutionalise safety awareness by making it mandatory to show a short safety video and conduct safety drills before the start of each shift.

CEA Chairperson Prasad said that a resilient and dependable power sector is an essential pillar of a developed nation and acknowledged the efforts of linemen who work in challenging conditions to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply. He noted that Lineman Diwas has evolved into a nationwide initiative with increasing participation from utilities, highlighting the growing recognition of linemen’s role in nation-building. He stressed that recognition must be complemented with stronger protection and empowerment of frontline workers.

Basak said Lineman Diwas serves as a platform to honour frontline personnel while enabling them to share experiences and challenges and reinforcing the sector’s commitment to their safety and well-being.

During the event, a special Lineman Geet dedicated to the courage and contribution of linemen was released. A Safety Pocketbook containing essential safety guidelines for field operations was also launched to strengthen safety awareness and promote safe working practices.

A special display of safety equipment and advanced tools was organised to facilitate hands-on learning and experience-sharing among participants. The event was also live telecast across power utilities nationwide to enable wider participation.
