New Delhi/Bongaigaon: NTPC Bongaigaon launched the 2025 edition of its flagship Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) on July 1, with a vibrant inaugural ceremony, reaffirming the Maharatna PSU’s commitment to the holistic development of young girls from rural areas.
The inauguration was graced by the District Commissioner of Kokrajhar Masanda Partin (IAS) alongside NTPC Bongaigaon Head of Project Arnab Maitra and the President of Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club Kasturi Maitra. The ceremony marked the beginning of a month-long initiative aimed at nurturing leadership, confidence, and social awareness among girls aged 10–12 years from underprivileged backgrounds.
Now in its fourth year at Bongaigaon, GEM 2025 has enrolled 40 girls from 12 local schools, continuing its mission to empower the next generation of women leaders through structured learning modules, creative workshops, and activities focusing on physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
The event began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and the NTPC theme song, followed by a cultural programme that included dance performances by students of Bal Bhawan and Notre Dame Academy, and a moving theatrical act titled ‘Educating the Girl Child.’ A short film highlighting previous GEM achievements was also showcased, along with testimonials from GEM alumni who shared their journeys of self-discovery and transformation.
Speaking on the occasion, Masanda Partin emphasized the transformative impact of girl child empowerment on families and communities, and lauded NTPC’s efforts in driving this change. While Head of Project described GEM as a cornerstone initiative of NTPC’s social responsibility framework, focused on inclusive growth and educational equity.
Other dignitaries present included the Chief General Manager (O&M) Debarata Kar, Vice President of Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club Soumya Kar, CISF Commandant LN Meitei and the Head of HR. Union representatives Amit Kumar Asthana, welfare body members, and parents of the participants also attended the ceremony.
Running from July 1 to July 30, the program will offer participating girls a unique learning experience designed to instill self-belief, discipline, and a sense of purpose.
With over 12,700 girls empowered across various NTPC locations to date, the Girl Empowerment Mission remains a shining example of NTPC’s commitment to gender equality, social responsibility, and sustainable community development.
