SECL bags national award for excellence in water conservation

New Delhi: South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) has been conferred with the “Integrated Industrial Water Management & Stewardship Award” at the Water Digest Awards 2026, recognising its outstanding contribution to water conservation and industrial water management.

The award has been presented on March 23 in New Delhi by Raj Bhushan Choudhary, Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Government of India. It was received on behalf of the company by Harish Duhan, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, and Ramesh Chandra Mahapatra, Director (Technical/Planning & Projects).

Speaking on the occasion, Harish Duhan said that water conservation remains a key priority for the company, adding that SECL is committed to sustainable and responsible mining practices. He noted that effective utilisation of mine water not only ensures optimal use of resources but also supports the well-being of surrounding communities, particularly farmers.

According to an official statement, this initiative has significantly improved water availability in rural areas around SECL’s operations, enabling farmers to access reliable irrigation and cultivate multiple crops annually. It has also contributed to enhancing livelihoods while promoting sustainable water management practices in the region.
