

New Delhi: South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) planted more than 3.20 lakh saplings across its operational areas in a single day on Monday as part of Coal India Limited's nationwide plantation campaign aimed at setting a Guinness World Records benchmark for the highest number of trees planted in a day.

As part of the campaign, SECL developed Bilaspur city's first Miyawaki forest by planting 15,000 saplings over 1.5 hectares of land behind the New Commissioner Office at Koni in Bilaspur using the Miyawaki afforestation method.
The dense urban forest is expected to enhance biodiversity, expand green cover and improve the local environment over the coming years, the company said.
The plantation drive was led by SECL Chairman and Managing Director Harish Duhan and attended by Bilaspur Divisional Commissioner Sunil Kumar Jain, Director (HR) Biranchi Das, Director (Finance) D. Sunil Kumar, Chief Vigilance Officer Himanshu Jain, Director (Technical/P&P) Ramesh Chandra Mohapatra, Coal India Executive Director K. Rajashekhar, General Manager (Environment) Sanjay Sinha and other senior officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Duhan said environmental protection is a collective responsibility towards future generations and added that forests developed using the Miyawaki method will play a key role in increasing green cover, conserving biodiversity, maintaining ecological balance and mitigating the effects of climate change.
According to SECL, the plantation campaign reflects the company's commitment to sustainable mining and environmental stewardship while contributing to a greener and more resilient future. The initiative forms part of Coal India's larger nationwide afforestation programme being undertaken simultaneously across all its subsidiary companies.
