The plant, which has been operational since January 26, was featured through an audio-visual presentation released by Arvind Kumar at Indian Oil's Refineries Headquarters in New Delhi on the occasion of World Environment Day.

Developed in collaboration with Society for Innovation & Entrepreneurship and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, the Green STP uses wetland vegetation, natural filtration media and microbial processes to treat sewage, eliminating the need for energy-intensive conventional treatment systems.

According to the company, the facility has demonstrated strong performance over more than four months of operation, delivering lower power consumption, significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions and near-zero maintenance requirements. The treated water generated by the plant is being reused for horticultural purposes.

Indian Oil said the successful implementation of the project has established the viability of the technology and opened avenues for its replication across the company's refinery network. The Refineries Division plans to expand the model to other refineries, enabling environmental benefits to be scaled up across multiple locations.

In another sustainability-focused initiative, the Refineries Division announced a pilot programme for recycling end-of-life Inherently Flame Retardant (IFR) suits used by refinery personnel. The programme aims to promote circular economy principles by recycling used protective apparel instead of disposing of it as waste.
