Srinagar: Marking a significant day in the history of Kashmir, Girish Chandra Murmu took oath as the first Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir today. The oath of office to Girish Chandra Murmu, the first Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir was administered by Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice Gita Mittal, at a function held at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday.

B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, Chief Secretary, read the Warrant of Appointment. Jugal Kishore, Member of Parliament, Dr Nirmal Kumar Singh, Speaker, J&K Legislative Assembly, Judges of High Court, senior officers of civil administration, police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Army were present on the occasion.

About the first Lieutenant Governor

Girish Chandra Murmu is an IAS officer of 1985 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre. A native of Odisha, he had worked closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gujarat as his additional principal secretary during his tenure as Chief Minister.

The first Lt. Governor is an MBA in public service and also holds a post-graduate in political science. He will turn 60 next month.

Malik moves to Goa

The last governor of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state, Dr Satya Pal Malik has moved to Goa for the rest of his tenure. The two new Union Territories, Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, officially came into existence on October 31, 2019, Thursday.
