Govt gives nod to creation of Chief of Defence Staff post

PM Narendra Modi had announced the formation of post of Chief of Defence Staff during his speech on the occasion of Independent Day

New Delhi: The government has approved in principle the creation of a post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). In the same regard, an implementation committee was also approved and constituted to further determine and finalise the exact responsibilities, an enabling framework for this new post and all other issues involved to ensure smooth operationalisation.

The news came after Raksha Rajya Mantri Shripad Naik said in a written reply to Vaiko and Dr T Subbarami Reddy in Rajya Sabha on Monday.

A number of committees such as the Kargil Review Committee, Group of Ministers (GoM) Report, Task Force on National Security and Shekatkar Committee have studied and recommended the creation of the post of Permanent Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CDS).

Military reform is a continuous process and requisite steps are taken by the government from time to time, as deemed necessary, a press release said.

Backdrop:

The decision to appoint CDS came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement for the formation of the post of CDS during his speech at Red Fort, on the occasion of Independent Day. Speaking on the occasion Modi said, "Our forces are India's pride. To further sharpen coordination between the forces, I want to announce a major decision from the Red Fort: India will have a Chief of Defence Staff- CDS. This is going to make the forces even more effective."
