The decision to appoint CDS came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement for the formation of the post of CDS during his speech at Red Fort, on the occasion of Independent Day. Speaking on the occasion Modi said, “Our forces are India’s pride. To further sharpen coordination between the forces, I want to announce a major decision from the Red Fort: India will have a Chief of Defence Staff- CDS.
