New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the investment of Rs 1,810.56 crore for 210 MW Luhri Stage-1 Hydro Electric Project of SJVN Limited on Wednesday. This includes budgetary support of Rs 66.19 crore from the Central government for enabling infrastructure which has helped in reducing power tariff. The said project of SJVN is being developed on Satluj River in Shimla and Kullu districts of Himachal Pradesh and will generate 758.20 million units of electricity annually.

This project is being implemented by SJVN on build-own-operate-maintain (BOOM) basis with active support from the Central government and state government. The MoU for this project was signed with the state government of Himachal Pradesh during Rising Himachal, Global Investor Meet, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister on November 7, 2019.

The Luhri Stage-1 Hydro Electric Project shall be commissioned within a span of 62 months. The power generated from the project will help in providing grid stability and will improve the power supply position. Besides adding valuable renewable energy to the grid, the project would also lead to a reduction of 6.1 lakh tons of carbon dioxide from the environment annually, thus contributing to the improvement in air quality.

The construction activities of the project will result in direct and indirect employment to around 2,000 people and will contribute to the overall socio-economic development of the state. Further, Himachal Pradesh will benefit with free power worth around Rs 1,140 crore from the project, during the project life cycle of 40 years. The project-affected families will be provided with 100 units of free electricity per month for 10 years.

210 MW Luhri Stage-1 Hydro Electric Project is a run-of-the-river scheme with bondage for peaking for 3.40 hrs. A Concrete Gravity Dam, 80-meter-high, 225-meter-long and 8-meter-wide, would be constructed, which would create a reservoir of about 6 Km. For enabling the construction of the dam, the flow of the river will be diverted through a 567-meter long Horse Shoe shaped Diversion Tunnel of 10-meter diameter.

"Discharge of 644 cumecs would be utilised through four intakes which after traversing via four penstocks having 90-meter length would enter the turbines," SJVN's CMD NL Sharma said.
