Indian Army breaks Protocol to Hand over Body of Seven Year Old Abid of Gilgit

Srinagar: A news that is different from the regular ones of the cold war, mortar-shells exchange and ceasefire violation between India and Pakistan. The Indian army on Thursday broke protocol to hand over the body of a seven-year-old Abid Ahmad Sheikh who had reportedly slipped into Burzil Nala. Abid was resident of Minimarg across the Line of Control in Gilgit region. The minor's body was washed up in Gurez sector, Gilgit on this side of the Line of Control.

Indian Army contacted Pak Army on hotline

As per the reports in local media, the young Abid was missing since 08 Jul 19 and is likely to have slipped into Burzil Nala. In accordance with its ethos, as a humanitarian gesture, the Indian Army established contact with Pakistan Army on the hotline and also convinced the civil administration to delay the last rites. The local religious head and village elders were taken in confidence to support the noble gesture of handing over the dead body to the family of the deceased young boy at earliest. The locals offered prayers for the deceased at the Dawar Mosque. The social media kept buzzing throughout the day with humanitarian requests to hand over the dead body of the young Abid from both sides of the line of control.

"We ensured that the body was handed over at Gurez, which is near the place of the accident. The Pakistan army had told us to transfer it at Teetwal, but we preferred Gurez since it was closer for the distraught family," said Lt General KJS Dhillon, General Officer Commander of the 15 Corps who was closely monitoring the handover since Thursday morning.

Body handed over after convincing the locals

A press statement issued by Indian Army PRO Lt Col Mohit Vaishnava stated "On 10 Jul 19, local Commanders at Gurez made sincere efforts to hand over the dead body to the Pakistan Army commander in Minimarg. Finally, the commanders at the highest level of Indian Army had to intervene and the dead body has been handed over to Pakistan Army on 11 Jul 19 near Village Dudhgai."
The locals appreciated the efforts of the Indian Army to assuage the distress of the family members on Humanitarian grounds on Pakistan side of Line of Control.
