Navy inducts DRDO developed Torpedo Decoy System

Designed & developed indigenously by DRDO labs the Torpedo Decoy System will be produced by the defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)

New Delhi: India's anti-submarine warfare capability has received a major boost on Friday as Indian Navy announced the conclusion of a contract for Torpedo Decoy System 'Maareech'. This advanced Torpedo Decoy System is capable of being fired from all frontline warships. The prototype of this system installed onboard a nominated naval platform had successfully completed all user evaluation trials and demonstrated the features as per the Naval Staff Qualification Requirements. 

The torpedo decoy system 'Mareech' has been designed & developed indigenously by DRDO labs -  Visakhapatnam based Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) and Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) based out of Kochi, Kerala. Indian Navy said in a statement that "the induction not only stands testimony to the joint resolution of the Indian Navy and DRDO towards indigenous development of Defence technology but has also given a major fillip to the government's 'Make in India' initiative and the country's resolve to become 'Atmanirbhar' in niche technology".

Bharat Electronics Limited, a Defence PSU, would undertake the production of this decoy system. Torpedoes are self-propelled weapon with a warhead and can be used under or on the water surface. They are one of the mainstays of sea-warfare attack systems. "Indigenous Torpedo Decoy System, a major Boost to #IndianNavy's #AntiSubmarine Warfare Capability.
