New Delhi: Abhay Kumar Singh has taken charge of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited, a Miniratna hydropower PSU under the Ministry of Power, on February 24. Prior to his appointment as CMD, Singh was serving as Executive Director in the same organisation. He was also acting as a Nominee Director in Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Development Corporation Limited.

Singh was recommended for the post of CMD of NHPC Limited by the PESB panel on August 20, 2019. He was selected from a list of three candidates who were interviewed by the selection. The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved his appointment for a period with effect from February 24, till the date of his superannuation i.e. August 31, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Education & background

Singh is a civil engineering graduate from National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (formerly Regional Engineering College, Durgapur). He started his professional journey in 1985 with joining NHPC at Tanakpur HE Project (120 MW) as Probationary Executive. His persistent learning attitude coupled with the ability to multitask resulted in his taking up various responsibilities of the project at a very early stage. With his strategic thinking mindset, fact-based result-oriented decision-making, he is not only able to utilise the available resources to the fullest but also is able to achieve targets ahead of schedule. In his 35 years of professional life, he has played pivotal roles in the setup of many Hydroelectric projects like Tanakpur Project (120 MW), Dhauliganga Project (280 MW), Teesta low dam Stage-IV (160 MW), Parbati Stage-II (800 MW), Parbati Stage-III (520 MW) and Kishanganga HE Project (330 MW) with responsibilities ranging from construction management of key project components to the Head of the Project (HoP) and Regional Head roles. Due to his extensive experience in hydropower development, he has strong capabilities in tackling complex site challenges such as managing local issues, technical & commercial issues, re-mobilizations, etc.

Even though a strong team leader in a true sense, he strongly believes in teamwork through ownership, responsibility competency, knowledge, and one company mind-set. He is passionate about the development of hydropower projects, and at the same time is open to advancements and diversification in the power sector, including the other Renewables. He is a firm believer of inculcating new technologies in scheduling, execution, monitoring and state-of-the-art construction equipment/ machinery for faster and development of any project.
