New Delhi: Union Minister of Home Affairs & Cooperation Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for the development of a new terminal at Gwalior Airport. The ceremony took place in the presence of Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh, Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmer Welfare, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, Union Minister of Civil Aviation & Steel, a press statement by AAI said.

New terminal to be constructed at Gwalior Airport

"Keeping in view the increasing passenger footfall at Gwalior Airport, Airports Authority of India (AAI) has undertaken the expansion work of Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Terminal of Gwalior Airport at cost of Rs. 450 crores," the press release said.

"Expansion project includes the construction of a new terminal building with all modern facilities and upgradation of airside facilities," said the statement released by AAI.

Gwalior airport's new terminal to be energy-efficient

"Spread over 143 acres, the new terminal building of Gwalior Civil Enclave will be built in 20,000 square meters which is six times more than the area of existing terminal," said AAI.

Equipped with four passenger boarding bridges, the terminal will be designed to process 1,400 passengers during peak hours with an annual handling capacity of 1.5 million. The newly developed terminal will have facilities to park nine Airbus-320 and four ATR-72 type of aircrafts, it added.

The press release said that the new terminal of the airport will be an energy-efficient building with various sustainability features which include a double insulated roofing system, double-skinned insulated wall panel, rainwater harvesting to recharge ground water table and sewage treatment plant to facilitate the use of recycled water for landscaping.

"After the commissioning of the solar power plant of 2.5 MW, this airport will run on green energy. The terminal has been designed integrating the cultural heritage and folk art of Madhya Pradesh, creating a sense of place for the visitors," said the press release.

Employment opportunities

"Development of new terminal of the airport will give an impetus to the tourism industry of the region and generate new employment opportunities. The city also has great potential as it is emerging as a regional education hub attracting thousands of students every year. Gwalior is also one of the 100 cities selected to be developed as smart city," said the press release.

Dr Narottam Mishra, Minister for Home, Jail, Law and Legislative Affairs & Parliamentary Affairs, government of MP, Tulsi Silawat, Minister for Water Resources, Fishermen's Welfare and Fisheries Development, government of MP, Pradhuman Singh Tomar Minister for Energy government of MP, Bharat Singh Kushwaha MoS (I/Charge) for Narmada Valley Development, Horticulture and Food Processing, government of MP and Vivek Narayan Shejwalkar, Member of Parliament, Gwalior, were also present during the event.
