New Delhi: Delhi's second airport — Hindon civil airport — started operations on Friday after an eight-month-long wait. The first plane to take off from the airport was a nine-seater plane for Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district. The first flight to take off from Hindon airport is being operated by Heritage Aviation company.

The CEO of Heritage Aviation Private Ltd, Rohit Mathur, told ANI that one seat on the aircraft costs Rs 2,500.

The flights will operate six days a week, except Thursday. the arrival time for the flight at Hindon Airport is at 12:30 pm, while the time for departure from Hindon for Pithoragarh is 1:00 pm. After the first flight to Pithoragarh, the company plans to launch flights for other popular tourist destinations. The airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 8 this year.

Hindon civil airport to reduce burden on IGI

Hindon airport will greatly reduce the burden on New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, which is India's busiest airport, by serving as the capital's second airport. It will also enable passengers from western Uttar Pradesh region to save time.

Hindon airport is located close to Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Flights from Hindon to Hubballi to begin in Nov

"Flight connectivity from Hindon airport (Ghaziabad) to Hubballi Airport (K'taka) to begin from November 6. First commercial flight, by a private airline Air Heritage, from Hindon civil airport will take off on October 11, for Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh," Hindon Airport director Shobha Bhardwaj said.

What are the other destinations that Hindon will cater to?

Mathur said that in due time, Heritage Aviation Private Ltd will start operations of flights for Dehradun, Hubli, Shimla, Faizabad, Gulbarga, Nasik and Coonoor among other popular destinations.

The occasion was graced by Trivendra Singh Rawat, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Gen VK Singh (Retd); Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta, Member of Parliament, Almora and Atul Garg, Minister of State for Health, Government of Uttar Pradesh and senior officials from the Airports Authority of India. The dignitaries handed over boarding passes to the departing passengers.

The backdrop

Hindon civil airport, which is at a distance of 40 km from the IGI airport, belongs to the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has developed a civil enclave inside it for commercial operations. The IAF has permitted the use of the airbase for civilian flights under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), aka UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik). UDAN scheme aims at connecting tier-II and tier-III cities and making flying affordable.
