New Delhi: Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy RK Singh said on Wednesday that the government is considering making changes to the way RE power developers sell their power. He said that the government is considering allowing them to sell power on exchanges instead of the mandatory Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) or Power Sale Agreements (PSAs) routes that are used by them currently to sell the bulk of their power.

"India's power demand is going to rise manifold in the years to come. Because India has just started growing. So, the price on power exchanges is going to go up. And we are working on bringing in a provision for RE power developers to sell their power on exchanges," said Singh.

Currently, state-run Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) either ties up PPAs for RE power projects before bidding them out or goes on to look for buyers (through PSA) after projects have been bid out.

India will ensure power availability for its growing economy: RK Singh

While asserting that India will ensure power availability for its rapidly growing economy, Singh said that the country will have to rely on coal for base load to balance the intermittency of RE power. "The countries that have gas are using gas, those who have diesel are using diesel or some are using shale gas, India has coal. So we will use coal to meet base load," said Singh.

He added that India is going to add huge capacities in Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) to address the intermittency issue.
