New Delhi: Terming the Railway's Chennai Integral Coach Factory as a "jewel in the crown," Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday that there was no question of shutting it down. The Chennai Integral Coach Factory is credited with manufacturing India's first semi high-speed Vande Bharat Express that can run to about 160 kmph.
While responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the minister said that the government is proud of achievements of the Chennai ICF. "There is no question of closing the Integral Coach Factory. We are very proud of the achievements of the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. Its engineers and technicians made Vande Bharat…It is a jewel in the crown and there is every effort to grow and expand and modernise that company," he said.
Goyal also informed the Upper House of the Parliament that the government is currently considering several other bullet train projects. "As regards the bullet train, several projects are under consideration all across the country and at an appropriate time once the decisions are made we will let the House know," he said.

Goyal had earlier said in the Lok Sabha on November 27 that the Tamil Nadu-based ICF will manufacture 740 coaches for Train 18, which may cost a total of Rs 4,000 crores to 4,300 crores.
The Integral Coach Factory is one of the earliest production units of independent India. It was inaugurated by first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on October 2, 1955.
