Shimla: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between SJVN's wholly-owned subsidiary SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL) and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) at Guwahati today. The MoU focuses on developing 1,000 MW floating solar power projects in Assam. Highlighting the benefits of the project, SJVN Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) Nand Lal Sharma said that the project will generate 2,192 Million Units (MU) in the first year after commissioning. Around 50,425 MU cumulative energy will be generated over 25 years. SVJN will invest Rs 6,000 crore on this project. It is estimated that around 4,000 people will get direct or indirect employment opportunities. The project will also help in reducing carbon emissions.

Assam has a huge potential to generate solar power of around 3,000 MW, out of which SJVN would develop 1,000 MW floating solar projects across the state. This shall be spread over 4,500 hectares of water area, saving approximately 2,500 hectares of land as floating solar power projects does not require any land levelling, removal of vegetation or any displacement.

The present portfolio of SJVN is around 42,000 MW and out of this around 97 percent is based on non-fossil fuel sources. SJVN's presence pans across India and in neighbouring countries of Nepal and Bhutan. The company has aligned its vision of 5,000 MW by 2023, 25,000 MW by 2030 and 50,000 MW capacity by 2040 with that of the government's target of achieving 50 percent energy from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. As a strategic and reliable partner, SJVN plans to play a vital role in clean energy transition of the nation.
