New Delhi: The Chhattisgarh government has extended the lease of four mines belonging to NMDC (National Mineral Development Corporation) that were due for extension in March 2020 by 20 years on Tuesday. The public sector mining major, which has been in the business of mining iron ore for over six decades, operates three iron-ore complexes in the country. Two are in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, sharing a major proportion of the company's total output, and another one is located in Karnataka's Donimalai.
The news comes a month after a CII report said that the contribution of the mining sector to the country's GDP has come down from 3 percent to 2.2 percent in the last five years and also flagged the issue of expiry of mine leases of a number of mines by March 2020.

Of the PSU's overall 33-million tonnes per annum (MTPA) production in 2018-19, the two NMDC mines in Chhattisgarh's Bacheli and Kirandul under Bailadila projects contributed about 24 MTPA.
NMDC started the exercise for renewal of leases of Bailadila projects well in advance in the Chhattisgarh. Of the five mines in Bailadila sector, lease of four mines with an installed capacity of over 29 MTPA has been extended now and one mining lease has already been extended in 2017.
"We are grateful to the government of Chhattisgarh and especially Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and top officials for their support to NMDC in granting extension of lease (for the four mines) for another 20 years," said NMDC Chairman-cum-Managing Director N Baijendra Kumar.
