These 2 trains will be India’s first to be run by IRCTC

The decision to hand over two Tejas Express trains to IRCTC was taken by the Indian Railways as part of its plan to hand over certain trains to private players

New Delhi: The Railways has decided to hand over the operation of two Tejas Express — Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central and the Delhi-Lucknow — to state-owned Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) as test cases, sources said on Tuesday. The fares of these trains will be flexible and will be decided by IRCTC, sources added. The move is part of the Railways' plan to hand over certain trains to private players.

Trains will be handed over for 3 years

The Railways plans to hand over the trains to the railways' tourism and catering PSU for a period of three years on a pilot basis, according to the blueprint prepared by the Railway Board. No concessions, privileges or duty passes will be allowed on these trains.

On-board ticket-checking will not be done by Railways' staff but by IRCTC staff, sources said.

They added that the services of these two trains will be at par with Shatabdi Express trains and will be given a similar priority.

The 100-day plan

The Railways has been considering the idea of bringing in private players to operate trains and provide world-class passenger service to its customer base as part of its 100-day plan. Handing over of the two Tejas Express trains to IRCTC was a first step towards that end.
