New Delhi: (Defence News) In December 1971, Indian Armed Forces achieved a stellar victory over Pakistan which led to the creation of Bangladesh. The Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 that is also known as 'liberation war' was fought in East Pakistan from December 3 to December 16, 1971, till the fall of Dhaka. December 16, 2021, marks the 50th year of the famous victory and the year 2021 is being celebrated as the Swarnim Vijay Varsh. Several events are being planned, during the year commencing from December 2020 till  16 December 2021. The war lasted for just 13 days which makes it one of the shortest wars ever fought.

During the 1971 Indo-Pak war, Indian and Pakistani militaries simultaneously clashed on the eastern and western fronts. After 13 days the war ended after the Eastern Command of the Pakistan military signed the Instrument of Surrender on December 16, 1971, in Dhaka, marking the formation of East Pakistan as the new nation of Bangladesh. The instrument of surrender was signed by Lt Gen AAK Niazi, the then commander of Pakistani Eastern Command., in the presence of Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora who was the GOC-in-Chief of Indian Eastern Command.
