3 NEEPCO employees killed in explosion at Kopili hydropower plant in Assam: Report

• The bursting of the high-speed water pipeline led to massive flooding at the power station, which killed three NEEPCO employees who were present at the site
• A similar incident took place at the Kopili hydropower plant in 2019 when a water pipe exploded

New Delhi: At least three employees of North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) have been killed in a blast after a high-speed water pipeline exploded at the Kopili hydropower plant in Assam's Dima Hasao district on Saturday, said The Sentinel in a report. According to reports, the bursting of the high-speed water pipeline led to massive flooding at the power station, which killed three NEEPCO employees who were present at the site.

According to reports, the deceased employees have been identified as Dimaraj Jahari, a contractual employee, Anupam Saikia, the Deputy Manager, and Jayanta Saikia, the manager of the project. While two were reported to be residents of Assam's Jorhat and Tinsukia districts, one was from Dima Hasao district. The incident took place due to an explosion in the penstock pipe, which takes water from the Umrangso dam to the hydropower house. Operations have been initiated to prevent further damage to life and property in the nearby areas. A similar incident took place at the Kopili hydropower plant in 2019 when a water pipe exploded.

Located on Kopili river in Dima Hasao, Kopili HEP was maiden venture of NEEPCO when it came into existence in 1976.
