Coal Ministry reaches out to IIT-BHU, seeks ideas for R&D, adoption of tech in coal sector

• The ministry is looking to develop technologies through IITs/NITs and research organisations

• The discussions also focussed on the website www.scienceandtech.cmpdi.co.in, which was launched by Coal Secretary Anil Kumar Jain recently for promotion of R&D in coal sector

New Delhi: With a view to involve academic institutions in research and development (R&D) in the coal sector, the Ministry of Coal has organised interactive sessions with the students and faculty of these institutions in the past few days and has sought their involvement in Science and Technology to ensure sustainable development in the sector. Peeyush Kumar, Director (Technical) in the Ministry of Coal, interacted with the students and faculties of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), BHU, on Friday and explained the recent initiatives taken by the Ministry of Coal towards promoting Make in India and the Startup India programme of the government.

The discussions were focussed on the website www.scienceandtech.cmpdi.co.in, which was launched by Coal Secretary Anil Kumar Jain recently for the dissemination of information pertaining to research work (ongoing and completed) in the coal sector. 

'Govt seeking online research proposals from students'

During the session, Kumar explained the need of integration of technologies to meet the demands of the industry. He added that the government is in the process of seeking online research proposals and students should utilise the opportunity and take up various coal sector projects with an aim to introduce technology.

With the present shift towards the digital medium, there is an opportunity for students to integrate technologies in sensors, communication, software programmes and introduce it in various applications in the coal sector for monitoring, improving efficiencies, and ease of doing business. DRONE application in thermal scanning, 3D modelling, environment monitoring, rehabilitation etc, was discussed. The need for online training of operators by developing simulators etc, was also discussed.

About 100 students from IIT-BHU participated in the session and brought fresh ideas for introducing various technologies in the coal sector. Professor Piyush Rai, HOD Mining, IIT-BHU also addressed the gathering and encouraged students to bring in ideas for increasing the use of technology in the sector.
