Massive fire erupts at NPCL sub-station which supplies power to Noida metro

• The NPCL sub-station, where the fire broke out, supplies power to the Sector 48 metro station and to Sector 93 and Sector 84

• Almost a dozen fire tenders were pressed into service to control the fire

New Delhi: A massive fire erupted at a power substation in Noida Sector 148 on Wednesday. The fire broke out in a transformer at the sub-station of the Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) in Sector-148 amid rain and the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. The fire broke out in the morning at 8.30 am and was controlled within two hours. So far, no casualties or deaths have been reported from the incident.

"We received information that a 500 MV transformer has caught fire. The power department officials swiftly moved into action to bring the fire under control and informed the police and the fire department," VN Singh, chief engineer, Pashchimanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (PVVNL), said.

The NPCL sub-station, where the fire broke out, supplies power to the Sector 48 metro station and to Sector 93 and Sector 84. Almost a dozen fire tenders were pressed into service to control the fire. Videos that emerged on Twitter showed the entire NPCL sub-station engulfed in fire and thick cloud of smoke rising from the site. The power station is located near the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. 

The fire is believed to have damaged all the transformers. Reports by NDTV also said that power outages have been reported in the area because of the fire.
