India’s coal production rose by 2% to 79.54 MT in Feb year-on-year

• SCCL and captives/other mines registered a growth of 7.19 percent and 49.04 percent by producing 6.04 MT and 9.24 MT of coal, respectively
• CIL registered a negative growth of 2.87 percent by producing 64.26 MT of coal in comparison to 66.16 MT in February 2020

New Delhi: India's coal production increased by 2 percent to 79.54 Million Tonne (MT) from 77.99 MT during February this year as compared to February 2020. As per the provisional statistics of the Ministry of Coal, during February, SCCL and captives/other mines registered a growth of 7.19 percent and 49.04 percent by producing 6.04 MT and 9.24 MT of coal, respectively. However, Coal India Ltd (CIL) registered a negative growth of 2.87 percent by producing 64.26 MT of coal in comparison to 66.16 MT in February 2020. Coal Production of FY22 has been compared with FY20 as FY21 has been considered as an abnormal year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Coal production: 14 mines performed more than 100% of their capacity

Out of the top 35 coal-producing mines, 14 mines performed more than 100 percent.  Five mines' coal production performance was between 80 and 100 percent and another five mines' performance stood between 50 and 80 percent, said the Ministry of Coal on Monday.

Coal despatch up by 7.48% in Feb

Coal despatch increased by 7.48 percent to 71.27 MT from 66.31 MT during February this year as compared to February 2020. During February, CIL and captive/other mines registered a growth of 4.90 percent and 38.17 percent by despatching 57.47 MT and 8.38 MT, respectively. SCCL, on the other hand, registered slightly negative growth of 0.81 percent by despatching 5.41 MT in comparison to 5.46 MT in February.

At the same time, despatch to the power sector has grown by 15.27 percent to 60.06 MT last month compared to 52.10 MT in February 2020. Fall in import prices have been observed since the end of October 2021. However, prices are still high, discouraging coal import.

Coal-based power generation grew by 7.58% in Feb

Coal based power generation has registered a growth of 7.58 percent in the month of February in comparison to February 2020. The overall power generation during last month has been 5.49 percent higher than the power generated in February 2020. However, coal-based power generation in the month of February has been 85,534 MU in comparison to 88,642 MU in January with a negative growth of 3.51 percent. Total power generation has also decreased in February to 1,12,531 MU from 1,15,757 MU the previous month.
