National Monetisation Pipeline: Shipping assets worth Rs 12,828 cr to be monetised

New Delhi: Shipping assets worth Rs 12,828 crore will be monetised over the next four years under the Rs 6 lakh crore National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday. The monetisation does not involve the selling of land and is about monetising brownfield assets.

The shipping assets monetisation pipeline projects will be implemented by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and potential models would be a public-private partnership (PPP).

The Finance Minister announced a Rs 6 lakh crore National Monetisation Pipeline that will look to unlock value in infrastructure assets. Union Budget 2021-22 had identified monetisation of operating public infrastructure assets as a key means for sustainable infrastructure financing.

Towards this, the Budget provided for the preparation of a ''National Monetisation Pipeline'' of potential brownfield infrastructure assets. NITI Aayog in consultation with infra line ministries has prepared the report on NMP.

National Monetisation Pipeline

National Monetisation Pipeline is a four-year pipeline that deals with brownfield assets where investment is already being made, where there are assets either languishing or not fully monetized or under-utilized. "By bringing in private participation, we are going to monetize it (assets) better and with whatever resource that you obtained by monetization, you are able to put in for further investment into infrastructure building," Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said launching the pipeline.

"It is important that India recognizes that the time has come for making the most out of our assets", she added. Asset monetisation, based on the philosophy of creation through monetisation, is aimed at tapping private sector investment for new infrastructure creation, FM said.

The National Monetisation Pipeline will serve as a medium-term roadmap for the Asset Monetisation initiative of the Centre, besides providing visibility to the investors.
