New Delhi: Sanjeev Kumar (IAS) has assumed charge as the Chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Wednesday. Kumar is a 1993-batch IAS officer of Maharashtra cadre. Prior to this, he was working as State Commissioner (GST) with the government of Maharashtra. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) had approved his appointment to the post on March 25. Kumar is the 4th Chairman of India's national airport regulator in a row from India's elite bureaucracy, IAS.

With rich experience in the field of infrastructure and finance, Kumar has served in various ministries and departments of the government of Maharashtra like, water supply and sanitation department, energy and industries department. He has worked as Joint CEO of Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and has also been MD of Maharashtra Agro Industries Development Corporation.

He was the CMD of the largest electricity distribution company of India, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL), for more than four years and brought it to profit for continuous four years. He implemented a large number of public-friendly measures in MSEDCL, while improving operational and financial efficiency. Kumar has spent more than five years in State Goods Taxation Department in various capacities at the crucial time of introduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) in 2005 and now in GST.

He also has experience of working in the government of India and has worked as a Director in the Ministry of Power for two years. In addition to this, Sanjeev Kumar worked in the Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation as Joint Secretary and Mission Director for 'Housing for All' projects. During his tenure as the Mission Director for Prime Minister Aawas Yojna (PMAY), he designed and launched the prestigious scheme in that capacity.

Kumar holds a degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering from the University of Roorkee (now known as IIT-Roorkee) and M Tech in Communication Engineering from IIT-Kanpur. He also holds a degree in Financial Management from Jamnalal Bajaj Institution of Management Studies, Mumbai University.
In his new assignment as the Chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Kumar will lead efforts to achieve AAI's organisational goals of providing world-class airport infrastructure, top-of-the-line facilities, and leading air navigation services in the world.
