Rourkela: A new 'Variable Frequency Drive' (VFD) system for converter-1 Induced Draft Fan (ID Fan) was commissioned at steel melting shop-II of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) by Gautam Banerjee, Executive director (Works), on Friday. On the occasion, General Manager (Mechanical) AK Srivastava, General Manager (SMS-II) AK Chakravorty, General Manager (Electrical) S Chakravorty, General Manager (CET-Rourkela) SP Singh and other senior officers, executives and employees of the plant were also present.

According to the VSP officials, Siemens made a new VFD system which has replaced the existing hydrodynamic device fluid coupling which is used to transmit power from the 2.2 MW drive motor to the ID Fan. Notably, ID Fan plays a vital role in the performance of the converter. The commissioning of the new system will help the SMS-II department in achieving benefits like substantial energy savings, enhanced availability of ID fan leading to higher productivity, less maintenance cost and elimination of costly spares like fluid coupling.

The project has been executed at a cost of Rs. 4.9 crore under the consultancy of SAIL-CET. Banerjee also planted saplings along with other dignitaries near the area. The programme was coordinated by Dy General Manager (Electrical) B Kartha.
