Bengaluru: BEML Limited and Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL) have joined forces through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing the design, development, and manufacturing of spare parts for dredgers indigenously. This strategic collaboration marks a significant step towards bolstering India's maritime sector and aligns with the government's vision for port-led development under the Sagarmala initiative.

The MoU, signed by BEML CMD Shantanu Roy and MD & CEO of DCIL Capt S Divakar at BEML headquarters at Bengaluru, establishes a partnership valid for an initial period of three years, extendable by mutual agreement. The collaboration entails joint efforts in the development and manufacturing of dredgers, leveraging technology partnerships from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in the industry.

BEML, leveraging the growth impetus initiated by the Government of India for the Indian Maritime Sector, seeks to venture into the manufacturing of cutter suction dredgers and dredger spares. The company aims to contribute to the “Sagarmala” program by providing capital equipment for infrastructure development, such as navigation channels for coastal shipping and inland vessels. BEML's foray into the dredging business is in alignment with the government's efforts to augment the dredging fleet.

DCIL, in line with the 'Make in India' initiative, has embarked on an import substitution program for spares procurement to reduce lead time, costs, and save foreign exchange. The collaboration with BEML will enable DCIL to procure a significant portion of hydraulic aggregates, casting, and fabrication items domestically, enhancing dredger availability, cost-effectiveness, and competitiveness in both the Indian and global markets.

Both BEML and DCIL recognize indigenization as a strategic tool to achieve cost benefits and aim to complement each other's strengths to establish a robust technical foundation. BEML, with its expertise in research & development and quality assurance, will engineer, manufacture, and supply items to maximize cost-effectiveness and make indigenization a worthwhile endeavor.

This collaboration underscores the commitment of BEML and DCIL towards driving innovation, promoting indigenous manufacturing, and contributing to the growth and competitiveness of India's maritime sector.
