New Delhi: India’s first indigenously manufactured Bullet Train is taking shape at Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML)’s manufacturing facility in Bengaluru, Karnataka, marking a significant step towards developing domestic capabilities in high-speed rail technology.
Being manufactured for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, the train combines advanced engineering with indigenous manufacturing expertise. It has been designed specifically for Indian operating conditions, with a focus on passenger safety, comfort, accessibility and energy efficiency.
The train is designed for a maximum test speed of 280 kmph and an operational speed of 249 kmph. Measuring approximately 202 metres, it will comprise eight cars, including four motor cars and four trailer cars, with a passenger capacity of around 557.
The configuration includes seven standard-class cars with 3×2 seating and one executive-class car with 2×2 seating. The train also provides two dedicated spaces for Divyangjan and Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM). Two eight-car trainsets can be coupled to form a 16-car formation for future operations.
The train's interiors have been ergonomically designed, taking into account Indian anthropometric requirements. Passenger amenities include comfortable seating with adequate legroom, LED lighting, overhead baggage racks and additional floor-mounted luggage stands for larger baggage.
Each seat row will have wide windows, while power outlets will allow passengers to charge mobile devices and use laptops during the journey. The train will also feature modern bio-digester toilets designed to minimise effluent discharge.
A sealed, single-piece gangway between coaches will facilitate smooth passenger movement throughout the train.
A comprehensive passenger information system will keep travellers informed during their journey. LCD displays inside the coaches will provide information in English, Hindi and regional languages, supported by public address systems and automatic audio announcements.
Emergency talk-back units installed in passenger cabins and vestibules will enable passengers to communicate directly with train crew when required. A Wi-Fi-based infotainment system will also provide access to preloaded entertainment content.
Accessibility has been incorporated into the train's design to facilitate convenient travel for passengers with disabilities and reduced mobility.
The train floor will be aligned with platform height to enable level boarding. Retractable footsteps integrated into the doors will help minimise the horizontal gap between the train and platform.
Other accessibility features include dedicated seating and toilets for Divyangjan and PRM passengers, wheelchair-friendly doors and Braille-enabled information signage.
The train will be equipped with an advanced heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system designed to maintain comfortable temperature and humidity levels inside the coaches. Each car will have two HVAC units.
Several measures have also been incorporated to ensure a quieter and smoother journey. These include sound insulation in the car body and floor structure, noise-damping coatings, and aerodynamic skirts, bogie covers and fairings.
The train will operate on a 25 kV, 50 Hz single-phase AC traction system, supplied through a heavy compound catenary.
It will also feature regenerative braking technology, which recovers energy during braking and feeds it back into the electrical system, improving overall energy efficiency.
The train's nose and carbody profile have been optimised using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to study airflow and improve aerodynamic performance at high speeds.
The aerodynamic design is intended to reduce air resistance, turbulence and tunnel pressure waves, while mitigating the sonic boom effect associated with high-speed train operations.
The HVAC rooftop profile, roof panels and airflow deflectors have been integrated into the overall aerodynamic design. Exterior wind-guiding profiles and a sealed carbody are also intended to improve aerodynamic performance, manage pressure differences and enhance passenger comfort.
