New Delhi: BEML Limited on Thursday rolled out the prototype of its next-generation Driverless Metro Trainset (5RS-DM), developed for the upcoming corridors of Namma Metro’s Phase-2, 2A and 2B network. The rollout ceremony for the first trainset meant for the Pink Line was conducted at the BEML Rail Complex by Dr J. Ravishankar (IAS) Managing Director, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), in the presence of BEML Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Shantanu Roy and senior officials from both organisations.
The dignitaries also witnessed a test run of the prototype, marking a significant milestone in the execution of the Rs 3,177-crore contract awarded to BEML through a competitive bidding process.
Under the contract, BEML will manufacture and supply 318 standard-gauge metro cars for the Blue (Airport) and Pink Lines. The trainsets—designed, engineered and produced at BEML’s Bengaluru facility—will undergo an extensive testing and commissioning cycle aligned with BMRCL’s project schedule, followed by up to 15 years of comprehensive maintenance support.
The rollout showcases BEML’s growing role in India’s metro ecosystem, particularly in the segment of advanced driverless (GoA4) urban transit systems. All design and engineering work for the new trainset has been completed in-house, reaffirming the company’s capability to deliver world-class, self-reliant mobility solutions for major infrastructure projects.
Commenting on the occasion, BEML CMD Shantanu Roy said the unveiling marks “yet another significant milestone in BEML’s journey toward delivering next-generation mobility solutions for India’s growing cities.” With Bengaluru’s rapid expansion, he said, modern and efficient transit systems are essential. “We sincerely thank BMRCL’s management for their continued support and for placing their trust in BEML’s metro capabilities as we work toward a truly futuristic metro ecosystem,” he added.
BMRCL Managing Director Dr J. Ravishankar said the prototype rollout reinforces BEML’s commitment to supplying state-of-the-art rolling stock for the city. “This is a milestone towards fulfilling the aspirations of metro commuters travelling on the upcoming R6 line and the ORR Airport line,” he said, adding that the new trainsets would help reduce congestion, cut emissions and enhance overall quality of life.
Key features of the new driverless trainset include:
Contemporary interiors for enhanced passenger comfort
Energy-efficient systems with upgraded passenger information displays
Extra-wide gangways for seamless movement across coaches
USB charging points, ergonomic seating and improved accessibility
Compliance with advanced fire safety, crashworthiness and global safety standards
Compatibility with Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) for full driverless operations
The prototype rollout initiates the delivery schedule for serial production, which will proceed per the agreed timeline. With this, BEML continues to support the expansion of Bengaluru’s metro network and contribute to smoother, safer and more efficient urban mobility, aligned with the vision of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat.
BEML also recently secured an additional Rs 414-crore order from BMRCL for six more driverless trainsets (36 cars) for Phase-2 (Reach 5, Yellow Line). Earlier, in March 2025, the company received a Rs 405-crore order for 42 extra cars for Reach 6. With these top-up orders, BEML’s total supply to Bengaluru Metro has risen from 53 trainsets (318 cars) to 66 trainsets (396 cars), reinforcing its position as the largest rolling stock supplier to Namma Metro’s Green and Purple lines as well.
