New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the North-South corridor of the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC) from GIFT City to Shahpur in Gujarat at an estimated cost of Rs 1,067.35 crore.

The extended corridor is projected to serve around 23,702 passengers by 2029, which is expected to increase to approximately 58,059 passengers by 2041. The project aims to enhance connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT City, a major financial and business hub.

According to the government, the corridor will benefit multinational companies, educational institutions and commercial centres located along the route. It will also cater to daily commuters travelling between Ahmedabad and GIFT City for business, employment and education purposes, improving overall network integration and passenger convenience.

The project is expected to generate around 1,000 jobs during the construction phase, while approximately 250 people will be employed for operations and maintenance after completion. In addition, it is likely to create indirect employment opportunities across allied sectors.

GMRC, a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat, will implement the project.
