Coal supply for power sector adequate, July despatch up 18%: Coal Ministry

New Delhi: The Ministry of Coal on August 6 said the coal supply position for the power sector remained adequate, reporting year-on-year growth in production, despatch and receipts in July 2026. Coal production in July stood at 69.75 million tonnes (MT), up 7.51 percent from 64.88 MT a year earlier, the ministry said. Despatch rose faster, up 18.03 percent to 86.85 MT from 73.58 MT in July 2025, while coal receipts at thermal power plants increased 13.41 percent to 68.83 MT from 60.69 MT.

The ministry attributed the supplies to its focus on coal availability "with the continued support of Indian Railways."

Stocks at about 148 MT, or 62 days' cover

Coal stock at thermal power plants stood at 34.55 MT as on August 4, the ministry said. A further 113 MT was available at pitheads and in transit, taking total available stock to about 148 MT — sufficient, the ministry said, for about 62 days of the power sector's coal consumption and "providing a comfortable buffer."

Ministry reaffirms supply commitment

"The Ministry of Coal remains fully committed to ensuring uninterrupted and adequate coal supply to all consumers, particularly the power sector," the statement said. It said the performance reflected its commitment to the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat, and that it continued to monitor the coal supply chain to ensure the power sector's requirements were "met without disruption."
