New Delhi: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) on Wednesday said it will set up a state-of-the-art ship repair facility at Vadinar in Gujarat in partnership with Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), with a combined investment of Rs 1,570 crore, following approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).

The project will be implemented under the aegis of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, with DPA responsible for developing civil infrastructure, including jetties, at an estimated cost of Rs 650 crore. CSL will invest around Rs 920 crore to develop ship repair infrastructure, including two large floating docks, and will operate the facility.

Planned as a brownfield development, the Vadinar facility will feature a 650-metre jetty, floating dry docks, workshops and associated marine infrastructure. The project is expected to be completed within 36 months.

The facility will enhance India’s ship repair capabilities by enabling servicing of large vessels up to 300 metres in length, addressing the current gap in domestic infrastructure for repairing vessels exceeding 230 metres.

Strategically located with natural deep draft and proximity to key ports such as Mundra Port and Kandla Port, the Vadinar unit is expected to attract large commercial and foreign-flagged vessels, improving turnaround time and competitiveness of Indian ports.

The project is also likely to generate around 290 direct and about 1,100 indirect jobs, while supporting the growth of ancillary maritime services and MSMEs in the region.

CSL said the initiative will help reduce dependence on foreign shipyards, curb foreign exchange outflow and contribute to national maritime goals under Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
