EU adds two Indian shipyards to its list of approved ship recycling facilities: Official

New Delhi: The European Commission has added two Indian shipyards to its list of approved ship recycling facilities, making India potentially the first non-OECD country to secure such recognition from the European Union, a senior official said on Thursday.

The two Indian shipyards are YSI Recycling Services LLP and Shree Ram Vessel Scrap Pvt. Ltd.

"The European Commission has added two Indian shipyards... to its European List of Ship Recycling Facilities, making India potentially the first non-OECD country to have shipyards listed by the EU," Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce Darpan Jain told reporters here.

He said that it is a significant development as this process was going on for the last around ten years.

At present, there are 41 listed ship recycling facilities, including 30 EU facilities, 10 in Turkiye and one in the US.

"India is a top service provider as far as ship recycling is concerned... the issue was also taken up during the TTC (trade and technology committee) meeting," he said.

The move would improve the global recognition of Indian ship recycling yards and potentially strengthen their access to vessels covered by EU ship-recycling rules.

The Alang-Sosiya ship recycling yard in Gujarat is the world's largest ship recycling hub, and accounts for nearly 98 percent of the country's ship recycling activity.
