Green Hydrogen: By 2030, India will likely have electrolyzer capacity of 60-100 GW, says Joshi

Doddaballapur (Karnataka): By 2030, it is likely India shall have installed electrolyzer capacity of 60 GW-100 GW, said Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on Friday as he inaugurated Ohmium’s state-of-the-art electrolyser manufacturing facility in Karnataka. Demand for Green Hydrogen shall fuel demand for electrolyzers in India, said Joshi. Praising Ohmium’s electrolyser facility, the Union Minister said this cutting-edge facility could revolutionise Karnataka’s and India’s green energy aspirations. He also added that modern facilities like the one inaugurated today at Karnataka will provide a boost to India’s energy security by producing green hydrogen, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and integrating solar and wind energy.

“India has the potential to be the driver of growth for green energy in the world,” said the minister. Ohmium is ramping up to deliver 2 GW of fully assembled and tested electrolyzer systems at Doddaballapur in Karnataka.

Domestic electrolyzer manufacturing will ensure steady supply: Joshi

Joshi said, “Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is relentlessly working towards fulfilling the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose thrust is on achieving green energy goals of the nation.” Under the PM’s leadership, in the last 10 years, renewable energy (RE) installed capacity has increased more than 2.5 times from 76 GW in 2014 to more than 195 GW till June 2024, solar power capacity witnessed a steep jump by 30 times from 3 GW in 2014 to more than 85 GW now, while wind power capacity increased from 21 GW to more than 46 GW in this decade, Joshi added.

The minister said domestic electrolyzer manufacturing will ensure a steady supply, reducing import dependence and enhancing energy independence and is also aligned with our National Green Hydrogen Mission, which intends to develop India as a global hub for Hydrogen production, export and usage.

Potential of green hydrogen is limitless: Joshi

“The potential of green hydrogen is limitless. It holds the key to decarbonising sectors like transportation, steel manufacturing, and even heavy industry. It can power our vehicles, fuel our factories, and illuminate our homes, all without leaving a harmful carbon footprint. Although I am aware that I am talking of something that is in the future. But it is not unattainable,” said Joshi.

Joshi said he is also confident that the industry will benefit from waiver in ISTS charges for production plants of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives upto 2030. “Under PM Modi ji, the government is fully committed to doing all that it can to encourage this sector. We are strengthening this sector so that India can not only serve its domestic demand, but also emerge as a reliable supply partner for the world,” Joshi said.

The MNRE minister said that under the SIGHT (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) programme, tenders for setting up of 4.12 Lakh Tonnes Per Annum have been awarded to 10 companies. The minister also added that “speed and scale are India’s USP today under PM Modi.”
