New Delhi: India can become a $55 trillion economy by 2047 by leveraging its young workforce in artificial intelligence and establishing a strong presence in emerging high-growth sectors, former Chief Economic Adviser Krishnamurthy V Subramanian has said.

Speaking at the ‘India 2047 Leaders TALK’, Subramanian said sustained real GDP growth of 8 percent and strategic deployment of capital could generate significant gains through compounding across the economy’s key pillars.

He described the $55 trillion target for a ‘Viksit Bharat’ as achievable, driven by sustained growth, ethical wealth creation and structural policy reforms.

He also underlined the importance of India moving into high-barrier frontier industries, including defence manufacturing, dual-use technologies and commercial space technology. Such sectors, he said, could accelerate technological self-reliance, strengthen national defence capabilities and create opportunities for high-value exports.

The International Monetary Fund, in its April 2026 World Economic Outlook, estimated India’s nominal GDP at $3.92 trillion for 2025-26, making it the world’s sixth-largest economy.

Subramanian, who previously served as India and South Asia’s Executive Director at the IMF, said India’s ability to move up the value chain would depend on combining its demographic advantage with investment, technological capabilities and deeper integration into global markets.

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India’s latest growth projection puts India’s economic expansion at 6.7 percent in the current financial year. The central bank expects growth to be supported by domestic demand, manufacturing and services activity and exports, even as global uncertainty remains elevated due to the West Asia conflict and continuing trade tensions.
