India targets up to 8 GW wind capacity addition by FY27 on track: official

New Delhi: India is on track to add 7.5-8 GW of wind energy capacity in the current fiscal year as the country accelerates renewable energy deployment to meet its 2030 targets, a senior government official said on Tuesday.

Addressing the EU-India Wind Energy Business Summit 2026 at WindEnergy Hamburg, Rajesh Kulhari, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, said India had added more than 6 GW of wind capacity in 2025-26.

He expressed confidence that capacity addition would accelerate further to 7.5-8 GW in 2026-27.

India has set a target of taking its installed wind power capacity beyond 100 GW by 2030. As of August 31, 2026, the country had 58.52 GW of installed wind capacity.

2.42 GW added in five months

During the first five months of the current fiscal — April to August — India added 2.42 GW of wind capacity.

Achieving the projected 7.5-8 GW addition would require a significant acceleration in project commissioning during the remainder of FY27.

Wind power is expected to play an important role in India’s broader clean-energy expansion as the country works towards its target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity.

Speaking at the summit, Kulhari also assured the European Union of India’s full cooperation in strengthening renewable energy partnerships.

The EU-India engagement is expected to focus on investment, technology, manufacturing and development of the wind energy ecosystem as India scales up capacity over the coming years.
