The projects, sanctioned under the umbrella programme for provision of Kavach with an LTE-based communication backbone on balance routes of Indian Railways, will cover a total of 1,409 route kilometres across strategically important rail corridors in northern and western India.
In the Northern Railway zone, Indian Railways has approved a Rs 201-crore project for installation of Kavach on 811 route kilometres of the Ambala Division. The project will cover major sections including Ambala Cantonment–Ludhiana, Kalka–Chandigarh–New Morinda–Sahnewal, Sirhind–Daulatpur Chowk, Rajpura–Bathinda–Shri Ganganagar, and Ludhiana–Dhuri–Jakhal.
These routes serve as critical rail corridors connecting Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, handling substantial passenger and freight traffic and playing a vital role in regional connectivity and logistics.
Separately, Indian Railways has sanctioned a Rs 140-crore project for deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 across 598 route kilometres covering 48 block sections of the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway in Gujarat.
The latest approval complements the approximately 702 route kilometres of Kavach work already sanctioned in the Ahmedabad Division. With the inclusion of the newly approved sections, the division will move closer to comprehensive coverage under the indigenous train protection system.

Kavach, developed indigenously by Indian Railways, is designed to significantly improve operational safety by preventing Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), automatically applying brakes in unsafe situations, regulating train speed under critical conditions and reducing the risk of train collisions.
The technology has emerged as a key component of Indian Railways' broader modernization and safety strategy, particularly on high-density and strategically important routes across the country.
The latest approvals underscore Indian Railways' continued focus on expanding the deployment of Kavach across its network to improve safety, reliability and operational efficiency while supporting the growing demand for passenger and freight transportation.
