New Delhi: Indian Railways has announced a nationwide fire safety audit of railway stations as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen passenger safety and security across the network.

The initiative will assess existing fire safety systems and identify areas requiring improvement to enhance emergency preparedness and protect railway assets. The audit will cover key infrastructure, including station buildings, electrical installations, air-conditioning and ventilation systems, emergency exits, firefighting equipment, water availability, pumping arrangements and sprinkler systems.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the objective is to ensure that railway stations are fully equipped to respond effectively to emergencies, including fire-related incidents.

The audits will also evaluate compliance with prescribed fire safety and security standards. Any shortcomings identified during the inspections will be addressed through prompt corrective measures.

Indian Railways approves projects worth Rs 1,364 crore for safety upgrade

Joint inspection teams comprising officials from various railway departments will carry out the audits, with support from specialised agencies and State Fire Departments wherever required. Safety improvements recommended during the exercise will be implemented on a priority basis.
