Japan delegation explores Bengal investment, Kolkata air links

New Delhi/Kolkata: A Japanese delegation led by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ayano Kunimitsu met West Bengal Industry and Commerce Minister Tapas Roy on Friday to discuss investment opportunities, renewable energy and improved air connectivity between Kolkata and Japan.

The seven-member delegation also explored ways to expand trade and cultural engagement with the state, Roy told reporters after the meeting.

Roy said Japanese companies had expressed interest in renewable energy and increasing its contribution to West Bengal’s electricity supply.

“Japanese companies are keen on renewable energy, and they want the share of renewables to increase in the total power mix,” he said.

The talks also covered direct flights between Kolkata and Japan, as well as connections through transit points.

Investors seek easier business conditions

Roy said Japanese and Indian companies wanted a “hassle-free” business environment, and the state government had assured them of conducive conditions for trade and investment.

Asked to explain the concerns, he alleged that the previous government had created an adverse investment environment and said domestic investors had raised similar demands.

He also referred to Japanese chemical major Mitsubishi Chemical’s exit from West Bengal, questioning why the company had left. He did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding its departure.

Separately, Roy said the state would organise programmes in 2027 to mark 75 years of India-Japan bilateral relations. These would include food and cultural festivals as part of efforts to deepen engagement with Japan.
