New Delhi: Maharashtra aims to increase the share of electric vehicles (EVs) to 30 percent of all new vehicle registrations by 2030 as part of its strategy to transform the state into a global hub for future mobility, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said.

Speaking at the launch of Mercedes-Benz’s all-new GLC Electric at the company’s Chakan manufacturing facility in Pune district on Wednesday, Fadnavis said the state was shifting its focus from conventional automobile manufacturing to advanced mobility technologies, research and innovation.

“Under the state’s electric vehicle policy, we have set a target of ensuring that 30 percent of new vehicle registrations are electric by 2030,” he stated.

The government is expanding fast-charging infrastructure along major highways, developing sustainable mobility corridors along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg, and promoting battery recycling facilities to support EV adoption.

Focus on advanced mobility technologies

Fadnavis said Maharashtra’s ambitions extended beyond electric vehicle manufacturing to battery technology, power electronics, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, automotive software, design and research and development.

“The future vehicle will not merely be a vehicle running on four wheels. It will be an integrated mobility platform combining computing, energy systems and artificial intelligence. Maharashtra is ready to lead this transformation,” Fadnavis emphasised.

Highlighting Maharashtra’s industrial strength, he said the state accounted for more than 20 percent of India’s automobile production, with Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad emerging as major automotive manufacturing clusters.

The state was now transitioning from ‘Make in Maharashtra’ to ‘Innovate in Maharashtra’, placing greater emphasis on engineering, technology development and high-value research alongside manufacturing, he said.

Mercedes-Benz urged to expand global manufacturing footprint

Fadnavis urged Mercedes-Benz to leverage its Chakan facility not only for the domestic market but also as a manufacturing base for Asian and global markets.

He also invited the German luxury carmaker to consider Maharashtra for future investments in battery technology, software engineering and mobility research.

The Chief Minister said major infrastructure projects, including Navi Mumbai International Airport, the proposed Purandar airport in Pune district and Vadhavan Port in Palghar, would further strengthen the state’s connectivity with international markets.

According to Fadnavis, around 650 prospective customers expressed interest in the newly launched GLC Electric within 36 hours of its unveiling.

Mercedes-Benz has invested approximately Rs 3,200 crore in its Maharashtra operations. Its Chakan facility directly employs around 1,200 people, while its supplier and service ecosystem supports another 18,000 jobs, he said.

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, who attended the event, said Mercedes-Benz had contributed significantly to Maharashtra’s industrial development over the past three decades.

She described the commencement of local EV production as an important milestone for Pune’s automotive industry and assured investors of the state government’s continued support in addressing industrial challenges.

Senior Mercedes-Benz executives, including Mercedes-Benz Group AG Supervisory Board Chairman Martin Brudermüller, Chairman of the Board of Management Ola Källenius, Chief Technology Officer Joerg Burzer and Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer, attended the event.
