New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has moved to engage directly with Iranian officials following a security scare that forced an India‑flagged supertanker to abort its transit through the Strait of Hormuz. The Lila Vadinar, laden with about two million barrels of crude oil, executed a sudden U‑turn off the coast of Oman after operators cited rising regional threats and an escalation of missile strikes affecting commercial shipping lanes.

The turnaround underscores growing navigational risks in the narrow but strategically vital waterway, through which a significant portion of the world’s maritime oil trade passes. International maritime authorities have raised the regional threat level to “severe” after a spate of targeted strikes on commercial vessels in recent weeks, prompting insurers, charterers and flag states to reassess route plans and security protocols.

Tensions have deepened after Tehran publicly rejected a newly introduced “southern corridor” off Omani waters — a route proposed to sidestep recent danger zones — and instead instructed all commercial traffic to avoid Omani waters and instead transits via a centrally controlled route under Iranian oversight. The move has created competing navigation directives from coastal states and heightened the risk of confrontations or miscommunication at sea.

The MEA’s outreach aims to secure assurances for safe passage of Indian commercial vessels, clarify permissible routing and seek cooperation on de‑escalation measures. New Delhi typically balances diplomatic engagement with Iran alongside its strategic ties with Gulf partners and its energy security interests, which rely heavily on uninterrupted crude shipments via the Hormuz choke point.

Maritime security analysts say the immediate priorities will include confirming the status of India‑flagged ships in the area, coordinating with Omani authorities and international naval patrols where applicable, and pressing for clear, internationally accepted routing guidance to avoid forced detours that raise costs and insurance premiums.
