MEIL wins Rs 12,800-cr order from NPCIL for two 700-MW electrical reactors

New Delhi: Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd (MEIL) has bagged an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract from state-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) for the construction of two 700 MW electrical reactors at Kaiga in Karnataka, said a statement on Wednesday. “MEIL emerged as the lowest bidder, demonstrating its exceptional technical capabilities and cost-efficiency by submitting the lowest bid of Rs 12,799.92 crore,” said the statement.

Order marks MEIL’s foray into nuclear power sector

MEIL nudged past state-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) and L&T to bag the contract. “This contract represents the most significant project for MEIL and our strategic entry into the nuclear energy sector,” Ch Subbaiah, Director, MEIL, said. This order marks MEIL’s foray into the nuclear power sector. The news comes a day after Minister for the Department of Atomic Energy Dr Jitendra Singh said that India’s nuclear power capacity is likely to increase by 70 percent by 2030. The installed nuclear power generation capacity will reach 13.08 GW by 2029 from the current 7.48 GW, he said.

MEIL has presence in a number of sectors, including hydrocarbons, electric buses, defence, telecom, power, transport, manufacturing, general and social infrastructure, irrigation, and drinking water. Last year, it expanded its footprint outside India when it bagged a USD 648-million order from Mongol Refinery State Owned LLC to construct a crude oil refinery plant.
