NCL production rises 67%, coal dispatch up 75% as monsoon eases

New Delhi: Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) has significantly accelerated coal production and dispatch as monsoon conditions ease, with production rising 67 percent and coal supply increasing 75 percent as of September 8, 2026, compared with the average levels recorded during September 1-3.

NCL’s cumulative coal production for FY 2026-27 stood at 51.43 MT, while total coal supplies reached 55 MT as of September 8. Around 87 percent of the company’s coal supplies are directed towards the power sector, supporting electricity generation in key consuming states.

The improvement in operations has also translated into a sharp rise in railway evacuation. NCL loaded 41 rakes on September 8, more than double the average of 19 rakes per day recorded during September 1-3. The company primarily supplies coal to power plants in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Mine operations gain momentum

The recovery follows the easing of heavy rainfall-related operational constraints across NCL’s mining areas. Improved mine accessibility has enabled more efficient movement of manpower, machinery and coal.

The company has prioritised restoration of internal roads to facilitate faster movement of coal to Coal Handling Plants and railway sidings. Continuous dewatering operations have also helped reopen mining areas affected by water accumulation.

NCL has simultaneously stepped up engagement with road-based consumers, particularly power utilities, to increase tipper deployment and accelerate coal lifting. Regular coordination among project teams, railway authorities and consumers has further improved synchronisation across the supply chain.

CIL production rises 40 percent

The improvement at NCL comes amid a broader recovery in Coal India’s production and dispatch performance following the monsoon-related disruption.

CIL’s average daily coal production increased 40 percent, from 1.36 MT per day during September 1-3 to 1.91 MT on September 8, 2026.

The rise in production is also supporting higher supplies to the power sector. Average daily coal dispatches to power plants increased 27 percent, from 1.37 MT during the first three days of September to 1.74 MT on September 8.

The recovery in September is expected to support CIL’s efforts to restore production and dispatch levels towards pre-monsoon levels, while strengthening the reliability of coal supplies to the power sector.
