NHPC declares commercial operation of 2nd unit of Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric project

New Delhi: NHPC Limited has declared the commercial operation of its second unit: Unit 3 of 250 MW, of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, the largest hydropower project in the country. The milestone was achieved at 00:00 hours on February 1, 2026.

The company also successfully synchronized another 250 MW unit with the National Grid earlier on January 31. Unit 1 of the project was synchronized at 21:00 hours on January 31, marking a key step in the phased commissioning of the 8×250 MW project located on the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

With the commercial operation of Unit 3, the Subansiri Lower project has now contributed 500 MW to the national-grid out of its total installed capacity of 2,000 MW. NHPC said the addition reinforces the role of hydropower in providing peak power support, enhancing grid stability and facilitating the integration of renewable energy into the national energy mix.

NHPC Limited's Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Bhupender Gupta expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Power and the Governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam for their support. He lauded the efforts of the Subansiri Lower project team, led by Executive Director Rajendra Prasad, and officials at NHPC’s corporate office for achieving the milestones. Gupta said the successful commissioning of the units highlights NHPC’s technical expertise and execution capability, and underlines its role in advancing the Government of India’s vision of a sustainable and self-reliant power sector. He added that the progress would support the timely commissioning of the remaining units of the project.

NHPC Director (Projects) Sanjay Kumar Singh congratulated the teams at the project site and the corporate office for their coordinated efforts in achieving the milestones.

Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, thanked NHPC’s management and corporate teams, executing agencies including GE Vernova, BGS-SGS-SOMA, TREL and PEL, as well as local stakeholders and communities, for their continued support.
