New Delhi: NMDC Steel Limited (NSL) has marked a significant achievement in its journey towards full-scale stabilization, producing over two million tons of hot metal in the financial year 2024-25, ending March 31, 2025. This represents a 100 percent increase in hot metal production compared to the previous fiscal year (2023-24), during which the plant produced 966,468 tons in its initial seven and a half months of operation.
In its second year of operation, NSL’s integrated steel plant at Nagarnar has achieved 60 percent of its rated capacity, positioning itself to attain the full-rated production capacity of 3.3 million tons per annum (MTPA) in the current fiscal year. Commissioned on August 15, 2023, the plant has demonstrated a strong growth trajectory, reflecting NSL’s commitment to operational excellence and production efficiency.
Despite a challenging market landscape throughout the last fiscal year, coupled with a two-week production and dispatch disruption due to transporters’ protests, NSL successfully marketed over 1.45 million tons of Hot Rolled (HR) Coils and Sheets. This marks a remarkable 300 percent increase in sales volume compared to the previous fiscal year, reinforcing NSL’s expanding customer base and growing market footprint.
NSL also set a new benchmark in March 2025 by dispatching a record 229,874 tons of Hot Rolled Coils (HRC), the highest monthly dispatch since the commencement of production. A key factor contributing to this milestone was the strategic deployment of four Liberalized Special Freight Train Operator (LSFTO) rakes, which facilitated the dispatch of approximately 40,000 tons of HR coils in March 2025 alone. This marked a 63 percent increase from the previous monthly best of 141,207 tons recorded in February 2025.
With plans to further augment its LSFTO rakes, NSL is set to enhance its HR coil dispatch capabilities, driving greater efficiency and improved customer satisfaction.
Expressing his confidence in the team, NMDC & NSL CMD Amitava Mukherjee stated, “Our steel team is gaining in strength and crossing milestones with each passing day. I am confident that with their dedicated effort and enthusiasm, we will soon reach our rated capacity, even as we are inching towards becoming EBITDA positive.”
The past year has been marked by several notable achievements for NSL, including the attainment of four ISO Licenses and seven BIS Certifications, strengthening its position in the domestic market. Furthermore, NSL obtained the prestigious "Conformité Européenne" (CE) certification, opening doors to the European market for its products.
NMDC & NSL Director (Production) Joydeep Dasgupta lauded the team’s resilience, stating, “Team NSL has successfully surmounted several challenges to surge forward with greater confidence. Strategic initiatives aimed at improving systems and sustaining momentum have yielded positive results. This bodes well for NSL and sets the stage for further achievements.”
MNVS Prabhakar, Executive Director & Head of NSL Steel Plant, Nagarnar, commended the team’s dedication, asserting, “We are committed to producing the best quality Hot Rolled steel for our discerning customers. We are also steadfast in our resolve to further consolidate our position and contribute to the national goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
With a clear roadmap for growth, NSL is poised to scale new heights in the steel industry, reinforcing its position as a key player in India's industrial landscape.
